The event theme is “Fostering A Vibrant Halal Pharmaceutical Research & Academic Community”.

Hosted by Halal Pharmaceutical Business Initiatives, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HPBI, UKM) and Duopharma Biotech, the Halal Pharmaceutical Symposium is dedicated to researchers and academicians involved in the halal pharmaceuticals community.

The Symposium aims to bring together key industry players from policy-makers, academic institutions to business leaders and halal experts. Panellists and Speakers will share their latest research findings and update participants on current trends and outcomes. Government agencies will share the Malaysian agenda for halal pharmaceuticals, moving forward.

Shaping the halal pharmaceutical ecosystem draws contribution from all the relevant experts and stakeholders from the government and private sectors.  The demand for halal pharmaceutical products is definitely growing steadfastly. In 2018, it was reported that Muslim expenditure on pharmaceuticals was about USD92 billion and is expected to grow to USD134 billion by 2024. Halal medical devices, the latest addition to the Malaysian Standards on Halal, will also embrace the need for strengthening ties among stakeholders in fortifying its own ecosystem. What will be the strategies recommended moving forward, to enable these sectors to further excel? What is the role and area of focus for research-based institutions to support growth?

SESSION 2: HALAL PHARMACEUTICAL BUSINESS INITIATIVES, UNIVERSITI KEBANGSAAN MALAYSIA (HPBI-UKM) COLLOQIUM

HPBI was established in early 2019, represented by different faculty members at UKM, including the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Islamic Studies and Graduate School of Business. The conceptual framework of HPBI is to provide structure and content for the study of Halal Pharmaceuticals based on literature, industry experience and research. Covering various disciplines of knowledge, its objective is to develop value-added Halal Pharmaceutical data and information. Their recent research projects include those done on various halal pharmaceutical business issues – from marketing to research feedback from the general public, to technical pharmaceutical methods in determining halal integrity. Research & Development is a key component of business sustainability. It is also a platform for creativity and innovation to flourish and for organisations to grow. This session examines the role of Research & Development in the halal pharmaceutical ecosystem, and how it can reinforce the positive contribution of a vibrant academic community. How can Research Institutions ensure practical outcomes and extend such benefits to SMEs? What are the economic trends in R&D and what are their applications for Halal Pharmaceuticals? Hanisofian Alias is currently the Vice President in the Industry Development Division of the Halal Development Corporation (HDC). He joined HDC in 2008 and has since managed several portfolios within HDC, specifically in the area of SME’s capacity building, market access, product innovation and program development. From 2011 - 2015, he lead the Halal Business Transformation (HBT) program, an iconic initiative introduced by HDC to assist the SMEs in Malaysia to build their competitiveness in the Halal industry; focusing on compliance, marketing strategies, financing and branding. The HBT program was awarded the best “outcome-based” initiative the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in 2013. Prior to joining HDC, he has 13 years working experience with a multi-national company in the departments of new product design and development, manufacturing operation, supplier quality management and innovative project management to enhance quality, productivity and cost improvement.

Hanisofian graduated with a B. Eng (Hons) in Electronics from the University of Manchester, UK and holds an MBA from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Dato Dr Sirajuddin is currently the Senior Director of Bahagian Penyelidikan JAKIM. He was the former Director, Bahagian Penyelarasan Penguatkuasaan & Pendakwaan Syariah and former Director, Secretariat Majlis Halal Malaysia, Bahagian Hab Halal, JAKIM. Previously, he was the Halal Attaché (First Secretary of Halal) at The Malaysian High Commission, Canberra, Australia. He has been involved in a number of international halal seminars and workshops and has vast experience in halal certification and industry, both at domestic and international level.

He graduated with a Bachelor in Shariah and Law, UKM, then went on to complete a Masters Degree in Information Technology, UiTM, and a Doctorate in Computer Science majoring in Information System at University of South Australia (UniSA).

En Mohd Nasrul’s main activities and responsibilities as a Senior Principal Assistant Director in the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency includes coordinating issues related to foreign GMP inspection, training and quality issues for GMP Section (CCQC). He is also the Secretariat member and speaker for various local GMP seminar and workshops such as ISPE Biopharmaceutical, KL 13/11/2017 (Speaker & Secretariat), GMP Workshop for Traditional Medicine & Health Supplement (TMHS) & Cosmetic Manufacturer, 17-18th September 2013 (Program coordinator). Previous various involvements include international events like PIC/S JVP Program, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1-5/5/2006 (Sterile facility), speaker at Korea-ASEAN GMP Conference, Seoul, Korea, 30 October-2 November 2018 and many more. En. Mohd Nasrul also has contributed in publications and quality initiative activities Guide to Development of Sterile Pharmaceutical Preparation Facilities in Healthcare Establishment Guidelines; 1st Edition; 2009 (Committee members), Revision Workshop for Halal Pharmaceutical, MS 2424:2012, 5-7 May 2017 and Halal Medical Devices, 16-18 May 2017 among others.

En Mohd Nasrul holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours), National University of Malaysia (UKM), Kuala Lumpur, 1998 – 2002.

En Wan Amir-Jeffery has wide-ranging experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. He began his career in 1997 with the marine and environmental consulting firm, Sea Resources Management (“SRM”) Sdn. Bhd. In 2007, he joined Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) Sdn Bhd as Lead Business Analyst, Biomedical Business Development and Investment (BDI) Division. He was subsequently promoted to Vice-President within the same division in 2008. In 2013, he assumed the dual roles of Chief Executive Officer of Johor Biotechnology & Biodiversity Corporation and J-Biotech Holdings Sdn. Bhd. Here, he was responsible for developing and implementing key bioeconomy and biotech initiatives in Johor. He joined Duopharma Biotech as Chief Strategy Officer on 5 September 2016, responsible for business development, Halal initiatives and government business sales. He was appointed as Chief Operating Officer on 12 September 2018. He has also served as Chief Executive Officer of Duopharma (M) Sendirian Berhad, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duopharma Biotech, since 5 September 2016.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration – International Trade, University of Central Arkansas, US, and has attended the Senior Management Development Programme, Harvard Business School, US.

Dr Hyzan is an Orthopaedic Surgeon by profession and is currently practicing at the Sunway Medical Center. He has been involved in humanitarian work in Malaysia and countries which include Afghanistan, Aceh, North Pakistan and Lebanon. He is the Founder of OSA Technology Sdn Bhd, a company specializing in Malaysian-made orthopedics and medical devices for the ASEAN, Southeast Asia and Middle East markets. He also serves on the EXCO of Persatuan Perkilangan Peranti Perubatan (PERANTIM) & Malaysia Relief Agency (MRA).

Dr Hyzan graduated with a M.D Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1989. He then went on to obtain a M.S in Orthopaedics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1995. He has also completed a Sub-Specialty Course On Trauma, University of Alabama, Birmingham, United States in 1997.

Dr Wan Mohd Hirwani’s major research interests include technology transfer, digital economy, social and digital marketing and management information issue. He has published articles in journals which include the Service Industries Journal, Journal of Medical Marketing, Total Quality Management and Business Excellence, International Journal of Business and Globalisation, International Journal of Advance Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB. Hons.), 2004-2008, obtaining his Master in Law (LLM) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 2008-2009 and a PhD in Engineering Management from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 2009 – 2013.

Dr Ahmad Dahlan began his career as a Tutor in 2005 at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, UKM. He has served as a Lecturer since 2006, and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate level students, specializing in Shariah subjects such as Islamic commercial law, Islamic legal maxim and other related areas of Islamic banking and finance. He has written various articles and journals on Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic Economics and Islamic Commercial Law for forums and seminars.

He graduated with a Bachelor degree in Syariah from Al-Azhar University, Egypt in 1998, and obtained his Master degree in Islamic Law (Cairo University) in 2005 and his PhD in Islamic Finance and Banking System from University of Wales in 2012.

Dr Adliah has published more than 40 papers in International peer-reviewed Journals and Proceedings. Appointed a Member of the Malaysian Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee since 2016 by the Minister of Health Malaysia, she has also been invited as a Speaker, Facilitator and Reviewer for various research programs involving Hospitals and Health Clinics at the Ministry of Health Malaysia. She is also a Member of the Halal Pharmaceutical Business Initiatives, UKM.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) UKM, and then obtained her Master of Clinical Pharmacy (USM) and her PhD from Monash Australia in 2013.

Dr Mazlina’s area of research includes chromatography and spectroscopy analysis, chemometrics, counterfeit and adulterated drugs and Halal pharmaceuticals. Since 2016, she has been on the Technical Committee for Halal Pharmaceutical, Standards Malaysia. She is a Registered pharmacist with Malaysian Pharmacy Board and has written various books/journals/abstracts for local and international forums.

She graduated with a BPharm (Hons), International Islamic University Malaysia (2007) and subsequently obtained her PhD from The School of Pharmacy, University of London (2011).

Prof Dr Azura is an expert in Molecular Biology- Enzyme and Secondary Metabolites. She began her career as a Teacher at Segamat, Johor in 1996. She was then appointed as an Assistant Lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia in 2001 and later as Lecturer at Kulliyyah of Engineering (IIUM) in 2011.

She graduated with a BSc Ed [Biology (Major), Mathematic (Minor)], University of Malaya, Malaysia, 1996. She then went on to obtain her MSc (Molecular Biology-Plant), University of Malaya, Malaysia, 2001; and her PhD (Molecular Biology), University of London, United Kingdom, 2004. She is a Member of the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB).

Prof Dr Zhari was appointed Member of the Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan . He is the Chairman for the Working Group in drafting the MS2424. He has published over 250 scientific articles and several books and monographs including “Halal Index” – a bestseller book for the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia for the month of December 2012.

He graduated with a Bachelor in Pharmacy in 1975 from Institut Teknologi Bandung, obtaining his Master in Pharm. Chemistry in 1976 from Institut Teknologi Bandung and his PhD in Pharm. Chemistry at Universiti Strathclyde, Scotland, 1981.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hajah Mariam is Lecturer at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia in Human Nutrition, Food Regulations and Halal Food. She has 15 years of farming and agriculture experience with the Department of Agriculture Malaysia, teaching Food Processing, Agronomy, Extension and Landscape at the Institute of Agriculture Air Hitam and Serdang. She has also served 17 years with the Ministry of Health (MOH), responsible for food safety and quality programmes in Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. She has delivered more than 100 presentations on halal food, halal standard, halal law, halal certification, halal consumerism, halal nutrition and halal hub in Malaysia and other countries including France, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Australia, China, Turkey, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iran and Chile.

She graduated with a Diploma in Agriculture, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. She completed her Post Grad. Diploma Community Nutrition, Universiti Indonesia, Jakarta, and also obtained a B.Sc. Nutrition (Hon), King’s College, University of London. She has a MSc. in Food Service Management (Halal Food), Universiti Putra Malaysia and a PhD in Halal Product Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Associate Prof. Dr. Jamia’s research interests are focused on herbal medicine development, particularly in herbal standardisation and ethnopharmacology. She has published more than 80 publications as journal articles, books, herbal monographs and on Malaysian Standards. She is a Member of the Pharmacy Board Malaysia, the Malaysian Herbal Monograph Committee and the Malaysian Natural Products Society, and an Editorial Member of the Malaysian Journal of Health Sciences. She is also a Consultant and has contributed her services in numerous projects with Malaysian government ministries.

She graduated with a B.Pharm. (Hons) from the University of Nottingham, U.K.; going on to a M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Control from the University of Nottingham, U.K. She obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from King’s College London, U.K.

En Leonard Ariff has more than 30 years’ experience in the legal, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. He was a pupil in a legal firm in Kuala Lumpur and also worked in the Petronas Group of Companies before joining the Chemical Company of Malaysia Berhad (“CCMB”) Group in 1990, where his main responsibilities were in business development and business management at CCM Chemicals Sdn. Bhd. In 2000, he assumed the position of Managing Director of Usaha Pharma (M) Sdn. Bhd., CCM’s Pharmaceuticals retail arm. He joined ICI Paints Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in 2003 as its General Manager and was appointed Managing Director in 2005, before returning to the CCMB Group in 2008 as Chief Executive Officer of CCM Duopharma Biotech Berhad. On 9 January, he was also appointed Group Managing Director of CCMB, and served in that position until 28 December 2017, when he was appointed to the Board and re-designated as Group Managing Director of Duopharma Biotech Berhad. He serves as a Board Member, School of Business Industry Advisory Board at Monash University Malaysia, and has been appointed to participate in the CEO @ Faculty programme by the Ministry of Education, assigned to University Kebangsaan Malaysia (“UKM”). He was also President of the Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (“MOPI”) from 2009 to 2014.

He graduated with a LLB from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He also obtained a Bachelor of Economics degree from the same University.

En Amin is an accomplished TV Host, and also Secretary General of Pertubuhan Perunding Latihan dan Motivasi Muslim Malaysia (TAMRIN). He is a Practitioner Professional Learning Facilitator at Take Charge Sdn. Bhd. He has also published a book- Magnet Diri; Cipta Pengaruh Luarbiasa & Berjaya, which became a Top 10 Best Seller in 2009.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Law (LLB)(Hons) from IIUM. He is also a Certified NLP Practitioner (2012) and NLP Master Practitioner (2015), awarded by the National Federation of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NFNLP). He is a Certified ‘Trainer Basic Training’ with the Pertubuhan Perunding Latihan dan Motivasi Muslim Malaysia (TAMRIN). He is also a Certified Professional Member of the Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers (MAPS), and a Member of IFFPS (International Federation of Professional Speakers) which is established in The United States, United kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Africa, Singapore and Germany.

En Romzi has over 10 years’ experience in the Halal industry, and over 17 years in the customer service industries including telecommunications, the airlines industry and the retail industry. Having also worked in Singapore and Saudi Arabia, he has been presenting talks on the halal industry since 2013, both to domestic and international delegates to Malaysia. He has also spoken in international seminars held in Seoul, Korea, Taipei, Taiwan, Manila, Philippines and Singapore. He was part of a Project Start-up Team for Nas Air, a low cost airline in Saudi Arabia.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Oklahoma, USA.

En Muhammad Lofty has more than 23 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, product engineering, process improvement, product and project management, project investment evaluation, technical due diligence, Intellectual Property and innovation management, with a wide exposure in government and industry sectors.

He began his career in 1996 as an Industrial Engineer with Otis Manufacturing Company Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned American company under United Technologies Corporation (UTC).

He graduated with a Master of Engineering Management from Universiti Putra Malaysia.
