What is Halal?

Halal is a word from the Holy book of Islam, the Qur’an. In the Qur’an, it mentions how Allah commands Muslims to eat what is good and leave the forbidden. Halal and Toyyib are very important to Muslims, which each carries the meaning of lawful and wholesomeness, core values that are upheld by the Islamic Law.

Halal means “lawful” or “permissible“. In the context of food, all is Halal, with a few exceptions that are specifically prohibited, such as:

  • All derivatives from the pig
  • Animals that are not slaughtered according to the Islamic law
  • Poisonous animals
  • Dangerous animals
  • Khamr or alcohol
